Celebrating Heroism

Are you in need of some good news? Everyday heroes walk among us in the communities of Charlotte – in our workplace, our neighborhoods, local coffee houses, soccer fields or bus stops. These people make our city a better place by sacrificing personal incentive to improve their communities.

Silent Images invites the city of Charlotte to pick up their cameras and share the good news of a quiet hero in their community. This photographic celebration will be presented as a gallery at the Levine Museum of the New South from July until December of 2012.

To participate in this project, photograph your local hero. Each photograph submitted will be featured in the gallery as a part of our Hero Collage, recognizing both hero and photographer. In addition, every hero is invited to the reception for the gallery’s opening. Let’s celebrate our heroes!

Brad volunteers as a local cop. After budget cuts, the local police department was ready to turn cases away until people like Brad stepped in to help. Without a gun or taser, Brad risks his life to help police track down suspects in crime. He does it all for free.
Kaitlyn hangs out in alleys behind closed grocery stores in her free time. She is a fearless, dumpster-diving college student who has small pockets but a huge heart for feeding the homeless.
Allison is a teacher who sees the best in her students at the lowest performing school in CMS.
Mary Ann started an afterschool tutoring program at Providence Baptist Church 16 years ago. Through her efforts, she has built relationships with families, helped with a wide array of needs, inspired coworkers and touched hundreds of children and families.
Rachel founded Refugee Support Services and assists families who are poverty-stricken, know limited English, and have no comprehension of American culture as they begin to settle into their new lives.
Adelaide, 9 years old, spends her afternoons after school picking up trash from her street. She has inspired her friends to join her and they organized a club which seeks to recycle the trash they collect.
Curt was born in Jamaica but moved to the U.S. when he was young. Today, he works for CMS and spends his summer driving busses to serve the homeless children in Charlotte.
In July, 2005, Angela was the victim of a shooting that would change her life forever. She now works daily to improve the use of her legs and inspires others to overcome challenges they face.
Ronnie is a kindergarten teacher at Smithfield Elementary. He encourages his students to excel academically, while simultaneously living as a positive male role model for many children. His kind heart and dedication to others inspires his students and coworkers.
Todd and Michelle Buelow raise thousands every year for the Charlotte Rescue Mission through their personal efforts and the donations from their company Bella Tunno.
Betsy ensures that appropriate and lasting services are provided to individual with disabilities within ESUCP. She is also the founder of five schools in India where educational services are provided to children whose families are destitute. Her devotion and commitment to help others is truly inspirational to those around her.
Dick started Camp Blue Skies for adults with developmental disabilities, giving them an outlet for fun with friends.
